Collecting Antique Furniture

Antique furniture often has more character than modern day furniture. Antique furniture is often better crafted than modern furniture and antique furniture can also be less expensive than its modern counterpart. It seems impossible to be able to furnish a complete house or apartment with antique furniture and have a great looking end result and actually pay less than you would if you bought inferior furniture from modern department or furniture stores, but it can be true if you take the time and care to shop carefully and be patient until you find what you are looking for. Antique furniture is always a great addition to a room even if it is one piece you are adding to an already furnished and decorated space.

Some ideas for using antique furniture in conjunction with your newer pieces of upholstered chairs and sofas is end tables, bookcases and storage chests and cabinets. These types of items work very well in a room with modern pieces of seating that are comfortable and durable. A great round oak pedestal table, cut down to a lower height makes an excellent coffee table for the living room and serves as a dining service for casual entertaining or even playing games.

Another idea for use of antique furniture in your home would be an antique carve mahogany headboard can be used with a modern mattress and box springs to create a healthy supportive sleeping surface with the decorative framing of a great antique bed. Or you can use one or two antique walnut or pine Windsor chairs to flank your fireplace opposite a new overstuffed sectional and get a great look and you are mixing your antique furniture with modern, more comfortable furniture for sitting and lounging.

Antique trunks are another item used as furniture and serve in almost any room in your home. Although a steamer trunk was not intended as furniture, these popular and useful antiques are often used as furniture. A more classic piece of antique furniture used in bedrooms, family rooms and dens is the blanket chest. These chests make great storage space for linens, clothes and even games. So antique furniture can be furniture that was once used as furniture long ago or it can be an antique item not originally designed as furniture, but adapted by you to use for that purpose.
