Collecting Antique Toys

Antique toys are about as varied as toys in general. You have wind-up antique toys, you have antique toy dolls, you have antique riding toys, you have antique miniature metal toy cars, you have antique toy trains and you have antique toys that are mechanical banks, although some people don't include them in the list of antique toys. Antique toys can be made of china, tin, paper, wood, iron or cloth. Antique toys are sometimes of a folk nature and handmade or sometimes mass produced in countries all over the world.

Some of the aspects of antique toys that add to the monetary value of the toy are condition, of course, scarcity, history and packaging. When an antique of vintage toy is in its original packaging and that packaging is in mint condition, you would be surprised at what the value of that antique toy can climb to...this is true with antique toys such as board games and Matchbox cars, Barbie dolls and tin wind-up toys. Although the antique toy in pristine condition in the original packaging is very important, it doesn't mean that a battered up old baseball glove if owned by a famous baseball player as a boy won't be worth a fortune or that even the cracked head of a doll, if it is a rare china doll head from France, for instance isn't worth investing in.

Antique toys make excellent additions to your home decorating schemes. You can fill a showcase in your family room with antique toys or you can display them on a high shelf in a child's bedroom or a guest room. Antique toys are wonderful for decorating items at the holidays. Antique toys can add a feeling of tradition and nostalgia to your holiday table or entry way or even to your front porch or yard.

Antique toys are often featured on the Antiques Roadshow television show and that is often a great place to get an education from the experts about antique toys or antiques in general. Antique toys can be the center of a new hobby that you pursue on your own, or antique toys can be a focal point of time spent with the young people in your life. It would be a great hobby to share with them and it might lead to building memories and trust for both you and the child or teen. If you both become really involved in the study of and collecting of antique toys, you might even end up with a small business of buying and selling antique toys. You never know where it will lead you so why not look at some books at the bookstore or some websites all about antique toys and see if they are of interest to you.
