Collecting Antiques

Antiques by true definition are of an age of at least one hundred years. This definition has been reduced to more of a guideline and is up to interpretation as antiques increased in popularity and demand and the volume of readily available antiques of quality and age diminished, the definition became broader and broader. Now, in the U.S. especially, dealers who buy and sell antiques often sell collectables as antiques and items that are really more vintage than antiques and are sometimes as young as 50 years.

An example of this in in the case of antique furniture. Take furniture from the fifties with its distinct styles and colors. This furniture is often seen for sale in antique stores or malls, but is obviously not one hundred years old as it came from the fifties of the twentieth century so it is less than sixty years old, yet commonly included in the group known as antique furniture.

Another example is in the case of antique dolls. Some Madame Alexander dolls that or a mere fifty years old are bought and sold as antique dolls. True, this is only semantics and whether a particular item of a collectable nature is fifty years old or a hundred years old only matters if it matters. A doll collector who is primarily interested in antique dolls might very well include a few of the very collectable Madame Alexander dolls just because they are classic. Like Victoria, for instance or the Vogue doll named Ginny that was enormously successful in the fifties and is very collectible today.

But truly antique dolls would be dolls that are a century old. dolls made of bisque, porcelain or cloth, dolls from France and Germany with glamorous costumes or primitive folk art dolls from pioneer days. Some of these dolls are worth up six or seven thousand dollars. But sometimes, you might be lucky and find one at a moving sale for under a hundred dollars. Antique dolls like any type of antique is often undervalued and underpriced and it is possible, if you look hard enough to bet wonderful examples of antique dolls at affordable prices.

There are some many categories of antiques that no mater what your interest may be, there are antique items related to that interest that you can acquire and use for display, hobby or home decorating. Antiques of certain varieties make great gifts as a welcome alternative to some new article of some kind purchased from a local department store and made in China. You can find antique jewelry, antique guns, antique radios, antique clocks, antique cars, antique clothing, antique books and antique musical instruments. Antiques are fun to research and fun to own.
