How to Value Your Antiques

There is more than one way to assign a value to your antiques. There is, of course the monetary value that can be an arbitrary figure if you are in the business of selling antiques and you decide on the value of one in particular because of some aspect of the item that falls outside normal criteria for pricing antiques. This might be because you happen to love the piece and don't necessarily want to sell it, but figure if you can get at least this certain amount then you are willing to part with it. So the value of that antique is set by you for your own purposes.

But there is a more standard and universally accepted way to determine the value of your antiques and that is by appraisal from a qualified antiques appraiser. Appraisers have specific knowledge, training and expertise about certain antiques and they can determine the value of your antiques by considering many aspects before giving you a value. The age, condition, history, rarity and sometimes market demand. It depends on the particular antique in question. An antique diamond ring will have set objective criteria that determine its value, but a piece of venetian glass might be more dependent on what the most recent documented cost of a similar piece sold for. So in some cases, there are subjective considerations.

Another way to decide on the value of your antiques is weighing the attachment to the piece and this is important when you are considering, not the monetary value, but the sentimental value of the antique. And sentimental value can be just as important or more so than the monetary value of antiques. If you have an antique in your possession that a favorite great aunt bestowed on you when you were 12 years old and you have treasured for fifty years, then that antique has enormous value for you and you wouldn't part with it for all the money in the world because it is your physical link to a dear relative who entrusted that antique to you so long ago. Well, this kind of value is unmeasurable really.

If you have many, many antiques from collecting over the years and decide that it is time to reduce your clutter and your burden, you might have a garage sale. At garage sales, the true value of antiques is sometimes not appreciated and the monetary value is often considerably lower to the value of antiques in an upscale antiques shop so you have to adjust the price according to what the market will bear. And even though the value of your antiques is not really any lower than the value of the antiques at that upscale antiques shop, you may only be able to get a third of the real value when you sell your antiques in this manner.
